Terms of Service
Effective date: September 10, 2026
Acceptance of Terms
By downloading, installing, or using GitSync.md ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.
Description of the App
GitSync.md is a paid, open-source iOS application that provides Git version control functionality on iPhone and iPad. The base App is available as a one-time App Store purchase. It uses libgit2 for local Git operations and connects directly to the Git provider you configure. Manual Git operations, Shortcuts, callbacks, Background Sync, and local features are all included with the one-time purchase.
Background Sync is included with the App purchase and provides best-effort repository reconciliation while the App is closed. After one explicit installation-level opt-in, it applies to all current and future cloned or managed repositories unless you exclude one. Reconciliation runs entirely on your device using the App's own Git engine and is attempted when the app is activated in the foreground and when iOS grants discretionary background processing time. Apple and iOS do not guarantee background delivery, timing, frequency, or execution; Background Sync is not guaranteed or truly real-time syncing. An optional Push Sync setting — off by default — lets you install the GitSync.md GitHub App once per personal account or organization, with access to all or selected repositories, instead of configuring repository webhooks. It delivers a best-effort alert and asks iOS for bounded reconciliation of the matching included branch when automatic pull is enabled. Separately enabled publishing keeps the same safety rules; iOS may suppress the attempt, and tapping remains a pull-only fallback. The first-party relay stores repository names, verified GitHub installation/account identifiers, and APNs registration data and transiently routes branch and commit hints, but never receives local repository contents, local paths, or Git credentials.
License
GitSync.md is open-source software. The source code is available on GitHub and is subject to the license terms specified in the repository. Your use of the compiled App from the App Store is also subject to Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA).
Your Account & Authentication
To use GitSync.md's Git features, you must provide your own GitHub credentials via OAuth sign-in or a Personal Access Token. You are responsible for:
- Maintaining the security of your GitHub account and tokens
- All activity that occurs through your authenticated session in the App
- Ensuring you have the necessary permissions to access and modify any repositories you interact with
- Connecting Push Sync only for personal accounts you own or organizations for which you are an authorized owner, and managing or uninstalling that GitHub App access on GitHub when it is no longer wanted
GitSync.md stores your credentials securely in the iOS Keychain but is not responsible for unauthorized access to your device or accounts.
Acceptable Use
You agree to use the App in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and in accordance with GitHub's Acceptable Use Policies. You agree not to:
- Use the App to access repositories without proper authorization
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the App's security mechanisms
- Use the App to distribute malware or malicious content through Git repositories
- Violate any third-party rights, including intellectual property rights, through your use of the App
Your Content
GitSync.md does not claim any ownership of your repositories, files, commits, or other content. Git content and credentials flow directly between your device and your Git provider. Background Sync has no server component and never sends repository names, URLs, content, local paths, or credentials anywhere except directly to your configured Git provider during normal Git operations.
Background Sync Safety Terms
While Background Sync is enabled, you can independently turn automatic pull and automatic publishing on or off. Pulls are limited to clean fast-forwards on each repository's configured checked-out branch. Publishing requires separate, default-off consent and may stage all non-ignored local edits, create a commit with the configured author and default message, and push directly from your device to the configured Git provider. With pull off, push-only mode still fetches remote metadata for safety but does not update the worktree. The App never force-pushes, rebases, merges, switches branches, resolves conflicts, or recreates missing branches. Remote-ahead local edits, divergence, a missing or wrong branch, authentication/trust requirements, unavailable files, and failures require manual attention. A failed push may leave a safe local commit for later retry. Per-repository network/power policies and exclusions remain under your control.
Because Background Sync runs entirely on your device, its availability depends on iOS granting background time rather than on a service we operate. Force-quit behavior, Low Power Mode, network/power policy, and operating-system scheduling can delay or prevent background processing. Background Sync is not guaranteed or real time. Global disable prevents new automatic work and requests cancellation of work already in flight. A Git update or publication that completed before cancellation cannot be recalled.
Third-Party Services
The App integrates with GitHub for authentication and Git operations. Your use of GitHub is governed by GitHub's own Terms of Service. GitSync.md is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by GitHub, Inc. Optional Push Sync uses a GitHub App with read-only Contents permission for push-event delivery and, for organizations, read-only Members permission for owner verification. The first-party Cloudflare relay and Apple's APNs process those events to deliver alerts with best-effort background wake requests. The relay does not call GitHub to read files; transient authorization tokens are never stored and are submitted for immediate revocation. See the Privacy Policy for the routing data, retention, and provider details.
The App is distributed through Apple's App Store and is subject to Apple's terms and conditions.
